⚠ Danger Pipe can shift or rotate mid-cut, dragging the operator's hand toward the blade. ALWAYS verify clamp pressure before powering on. ALWAYS stand to the SIDE of the blade — never directly in line with the cut path. Cut material and chips remain hot AND sharp for several minutes — treat every coupon as both thermal and laceration hazard until cool to the touch.

PPE Required

⊙ Safety Glasses / Face Shield — CSA Z94.3 glasses minimum; face shield for heavy cuts

⊙ Welding Gloves or Work Gloves — cut-resistant; no loose cuffs

⊙ Steel-Toed Boots — CSA Grade 1 minimum

⊙ Hearing Protection — when cutting for extended periods (>15 min)

⊙ Welding Jacket / FR Sleeves — protect from chips and sparks

Pre-Use Inspection

Blade guard is present, secure, and fully functional
Blade is correct type for pipe/material being cut — Evolution blades only; no abrasive discs
Vice/clamp is operational and properly tightened before cutting
Work area is clear of bystanders — minimum 3 ft clearance on all sides
Blade bolt is tight; no wobble when rotated by hand
Coolant/chip tray is in place (if equipped)
Power cord is undamaged; no exposed conductors
Emergency stop is accessible and functional

Operation

Setup

Place pipe in vice. Ensure pipe is fully seated against the back stop.
Clamp securely — pipe must not rotate or shift when force is applied.
Mark cut line clearly with soapstone or marker.
Align blade to cut line. Confirm blade is on the waste side.
Adjust fence/stop if cutting multiples to the same length.

Cutting

Stand to the SIDE of the blade — never directly in line with the cut.
Power on the saw. Allow blade to reach full speed before contacting material.
Apply STEADY, MODERATE downward pressure. Let the blade do the work.
Do not force or twist the blade through the cut.
Complete the cut fully. Do not withdraw partially — this causes blade grab.
Release the trigger. Allow blade to stop completely before raising the arm.
Do not touch the blade or cut material immediately — both will be hot.

Pipe Sizes & Blade Notes

Pipe Size	Notes
4" pipe — 12" lengths	Single pass. Confirm vice clamp is tight. Use Evolution Rage blade.
6" pipe — 6–7" lengths	Recommend bandsaw for 6"+. If using cold cut saw, rotate and take two passes.
8" pipe — 12" lengths	Use BANDSAW only. Do not attempt on cold cut saw.

Prohibitions

Never use abrasive discs — Evolution blades only
Never stand directly in line with the cut — always to the side
Never force or twist the blade through the cut

Emergency Stop

Emergency Response BLADE CONTACT / LACERATION: Do not remove embedded objects. Apply direct pressure. Call for first aid immediately. Do not operate saw until incident is documented.

Situation	Response
Blade jams mid-cut	RELEASE TRIGGER. Do not force. Power off. Wait for full stop before inspecting.
Pipe shifts in vice	RELEASE TRIGGER immediately. Power off. Re-clamp before proceeding.
Sparks / smoke from motor	POWER OFF. Unplug. Do not restart. Tag out and report to instructor.
Chip in eye	Do not rub. Flush with eyewash station for 15 min. Report to instructor.

Power Isolation

Cord-and-Plug Control Before servicing, cleaning, or accessory change — unplug the unit and maintain exclusive control of the plug. Per CSA Z460-20 cl. 4.3.5.

Power off the saw at the trigger and wait for the blade to come to a complete stop
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet
Coil the cord neatly and stow with the saw — keep clear of cut path

Post-Use

Release vice clamp
Brush or vacuum chips from the saw table and tray — do not blow with air
Inspect blade for damage, missing teeth, or cracks — report any defects
Return cut coupons to the designated staging area
Tag saw OUT OF SERVICE if any defect is found — do not leave for the next user to discover

ELIM

Cannot eliminate. Cutting pipe to length is required for fabrication training. Hand-cutting is not feasible at production volumes.

SUB

Bandsaw substituted for cold cut saw on pipes 6" and larger — see Operation §3.3 Pipe Sizes & Blade Notes.

ENG

Fixed blade guard; vice clamp system with positive backstop; emergency stop accessible from operator position; chip/coolant tray; fixed RPM (no variable adjustment to reduce binding risk).

ADM

Mandatory pre-use checklist (§2); instructor sign-off required before independent use; minimum 3 ft bystander clearance; defect-tagging requirement; designated cut-coupon staging area.

PPE

PPE per §1 — CSA Z94.3 eyewear (face shield for heavy cuts); CSA Z94.2 hearing protection for cuts >15 min; cut-resistant gloves with no loose cuffs; FR welding jacket/sleeves; CSA Grade 1 steel-toe footwear.
