Linked records: · ·
Standards basis: OHSA s.25; O.Reg 851 s.24 (machine guarding), s.85 (lockout), s.105 (PPE); CSA Z460-13 (Control of Hazardous Energy — 600V electrical isolation required); CSA Z432 (Machine Safeguarding — sawing equipment); CSA W117.2 cl. 9 (mechanical hazards); CSA Z94.3 (eye/face); CSA Z94.2 (hearing); CSA Z195 (Grade 1 footwear — slip resistance for coolant environment).

Machine Specs

MachineBaxter Verticut 475SA Semi-Automatic Horizontal Bandsaw
DriveElectric motor — hydraulic head feed system
Vise TypeSplit hydraulic vise — clamps both sides of blade
Feed ControlHydraulic flow valve — adjustable descent rate
CoolantFlood coolant system — required for all pipe cuts
BladeBi-metal bandsaw blade — confirm width from nameplate
Load SensingYes — hydraulic valve stops feed on overload
Auto Shut-OffYes — magnetic motor starter stops at end of cut
Pipe Capacity6" and 8" pipe confirmed. Max capacity: confirm from nameplate.
⚠ Danger The blade is exposed and moving during operation. Keep all body parts clear of the blade path and cutting zone. Coolant makes the floor slippery — maintain secure footing at all times. Do not reach into the machine while powered.

PPE Required

Safety Glasses / Face Shield — CSA Z94.3. Face shield recommended for 8" pipe — large chip ejection.
Cut-Resistant Gloves — No loose cuffs. Secure fit around wrist.
Steel-Toed Boots — CSA Grade 1. Non-slip sole — coolant makes floor wet.
Hearing Protection — Required for extended operation (>15 min).
FR Jacket / Sleeves — Protect from coolant spray and chip ejection.

Reference

2. CONTROL PANEL REFERENCE

Know every control before touching the machine. Do not operate any control you cannot identify.

CONTROLTYPEFUNCTION
MAIN DISCONNECTRed rotary (enclosure)Master power for entire machine. ON to operate. LOTO point for maintenance.
E-STOPRed mushroom buttonCuts all motion instantly. Twist clockwise to release. Verify released before startup.
POWER ONGreen buttonEnergizes controls. Press after E-stop release or cold start.
STOPRed buttonStops blade motor. Hydraulics remain active.
VISE OPEN / CLOSEButtons or toggleHydraulic vise control. CLOSE before cutting. Both jaws must contact pipe.
SAW UPButton / leverRaises saw head hydraulically. Use after cut to clear material.
SAW DOWN / CUTButton / leverStarts hydraulic descent for cutting.
FEED RATEHydraulic flow valveControls blade descent speed. Slower = safer for large/heavy pipe. Do not adjust mid-cut.

4. PIPE SIZE & SAW ASSIGNMENT

Confirm correct saw before cutting. 4" pipe goes on the Evolution saw only.

NPSODLengthSawNotes
4"4.500"12"✗ Evo SawUse Evolution cold cut saw (SOP-EQ-001). Do not use bandsaw for 4".
6"6.625"6-7"✓ BandsawSingle pass. Medium feed rate. Confirm vise clamped on both sides.
8"8.625"12"✓ BandsawSLOW feed rate — heavy wall. Monitor load sensing. Do not force.

5. CUTTING PROCEDURE → 5.2 Loading and Clamping (table content)

⚠ Round pipe must be clamped on both sides of the blade. Single-jaw clamping allows the pipe to rotate during cutting, causing blade grab and potential ejection.

Operation

5.1 Startup

  1. Confirm pre-op checklist is complete.
  2. Turn MAIN DISCONNECT to ON.
  3. Release E-stop (twist clockwise if depressed).
  4. Press POWER ON (green button).
  5. Turn on coolant system. Confirm flow to both blade guides.
  6. Press START. Wait for blade to reach full operating speed before loading.

5.2 Loading and Clamping

  1. Place pipe on roller infeed table. Support large pipe (6"+) — pipe must not overhang unsupported.
  2. Position pipe so cut mark aligns with blade path. Set length stop for repeat cuts.
  3. Press VISE CLOSE. Confirm both jaws contact the pipe squarely.
  4. Secondary check: push pipe laterally by hand. If it moves — re-clamp.
  5. Confirm all hands and body are clear of vise, blade, and cutting zone before descending.

5.3 Cutting

  1. Set FEED RATE: slow for 8" and heavy wall, medium for 6". When in doubt — go slow.
  2. Press SAW DOWN to begin hydraulic descent.
  3. Monitor the cut — listen for blade chatter or motor strain. If either occurs, press STOP.
  4. Load sensing valve will pause feed automatically on overload — this is normal. Do not force the saw head down manually.
  5. Machine auto shut-off occurs when the cut completes. Wait for full blade stop before approaching.
  6. Press SAW UP. Open vise. Remove coupon from machine.

5.4 Repeat Cuts

  1. Re-index pipe against length stop.
  2. Re-clamp vise. Confirm secure before descending.
  3. Repeat 5.3. Do not rush the clamping step between cuts.

Prohibitions

Emergency Stop

Emergency Response (1) Press E-STOP. (2) Wait for blade to come to a complete stop — never approach a moving blade. (3) Turn main disconnect to OFF. (4) If coolant spill occurred, clean immediately — wet floor near a running saw is a serious hazard. Do not resume until floor is dry. (5) For blade contact: do not remove embedded objects; apply direct pressure; activate first aid; tag-out and notify instructor.
🚨 LACERATION / BLADE CONTACT: Apply direct pressure. Do not remove embedded material. Activate first aid immediately. Power off at main disconnect. Do not restart saw until incident is documented and cleared by instructor.
SITUATIONRESPONSE
Blade breaksE-STOP immediately. Stay clear of machine. Do not approach until blade fully stops. Tag out. Notify instructor.
Pipe shifts mid-cutPress STOP. Raise head. Re-clamp fully before resuming. Inspect blade for damage.
Motor overload tripDo not restart repeatedly. Reduce feed rate. Allow 5 min cool-down. If it trips again — tag out, notify instructor.
Coolant leak / spillPress STOP. Clean up immediately — wet floor near a running saw is a serious hazard. Do not resume until floor is dry.
Chip in eyeDo not rub. Eyewash station — 15 min flush. Report to instructor.
Unusual noise or vibrationPress STOP. Do not resume until cause is identified. Check blade and guides.

Lockout / Tagout

Full LOTO Required Before Servicing This equipment has hard-wired power, multiple energy sources, or stored energy. Apply formal LOTO procedure before any cleaning, maintenance, or service. Per CSA Z460-20 and O.Reg 851 ss. 137–139.
  1. Press E-STOP.
  2. Turn MAIN DISCONNECT to OFF.
  3. Apply personal lock and tag to the disconnect.
  4. Verify zero energy: press green start button — machine must not respond.
  5. Perform maintenance or adjustment.
