Manual referenceE.H. Wachs P/N 16-MAN-01, Rev. A March 2014
⚠ Danger Rotating tool head will cut clothing, gloves, jewelry, or hair instantly. NEVER reach near the rotating head. Pipe edge after bevel is razor-sharp — handle with cut-resistant gloves only AFTER motor stopped.

PPE Required

CSA Z94.3 / ANSI Z87.1 safety glasses with side shields — MANDATORY
CSA Z94.2 hearing protection (operational noise exceeds 85 dBA)
Tight-fit gloves for handling pipe BEFORE setup and AFTER cut completion only — REMOVE before motor start (entanglement)
Hair contained; no loose clothing, neckties, or jewelry
CSA Z195 Grade 1 safety footwear

Pre-Use Inspection

Operation

Machine Setup on 2" Sch 80 Pipe

  1. Confirm 2" Sch 80 pipe is rigidly clamped in pipe stand (no rotation, no axial movement under cutting forces)
  2. Insert mandrel chuck into pipe I.D., with legs positioned NEAR the pipe edge — max 3/4" (19 mm) penetration from leg end to pipe edge
  3. Hold machine at desired clamping location, square to pipe axis
  4. Rotate drawbar nut clockwise with supplied wrench to expand mandrel legs into the ~1.94" I.D.
  5. Tighten drawbar nut to 25 lb-ft (use torque wrench for tight tolerance work)
  6. Verify mandrel legs are seated and machine is square to pipe axis (visual check)
  7. Confirm 26-411-01 beveling cutter is installed in tool slot with cutting edge facing clockwise; tighten wedge screw

Cutting the 37.5° O.D. Bevel

  1. Verify motor adapter is secure on machine body; motor mounting screws tight
  2. Confirm power switch is OFF before plugging cord into outlet
  3. Plug into GFCI-protected 110V cabinet circuit
  4. Turn feed handle counter-clockwise to FULLY retract cutter clear of pipe face before motor start
  5. Start motor; advance feed handle clockwise until cutter contacts pipe face
  6. Continue clockwise feed at smooth, consistent rate — let the cutter do the work (do not force; forcing causes chatter and tool wear)
  7. When desired bevel depth achieved, retract feed handle counter-clockwise to disengage cutter, then power off motor

Leg Set & Pipe Size Reference

UA46 stocks only leg set 16-021-02 for 2" Sch 80 pipe (I.D. 1.939"). Cutting any other pipe size requires sourcing additional leg sets (procurement task).

Material scope: Carbon steel and stainless steel ONLY at UA46 (no cast iron). Tooling: 26-411-01 37.5° beveling cutter only (no facing, compound bevel, J-prep, or counterbore tooling stocked).

Removing Machine & Inspecting Bevel

  1. Confirm motor is OFF and power cord is unplugged from outlet
  2. Loosen drawbar nut counter-clockwise to retract mandrel legs from pipe I.D.
  3. Withdraw mandrel and machine from pipe — support machine weight; do not drop
  4. Inspect bevel: 37.5° angle, surface clean, no chatter marks, no burrs at land
  5. Deburr inside edge if needed using separate hand deburring tool (NOT the SDB-103)
  6. Wipe mandrel clean; apply light coating of oil for storage
  7. Inspect 26-411-01 cutter for chips, wear, dullness — flag for instructor if cutter needs replacement

Prohibitions

Emergency Stop

Emergency Response Release the trigger on the motor body — the motor will stop and tool head will coast for 10-15 seconds. Do NOT touch the tool head while coasting. If the trigger fails to stop the motor, unplug at the wall outlet. There is no E-Stop button on the SDB-103 — the only stop control is the motor trigger. Tool head has NO BRAKE. WAIT MINIMUM 15 SECONDS AFTER MOTOR STOPS before touching the tooling. Bevel tool is exposed (no full guard possible on a portable beveler) — treat the head as live until you have personally verified rotation has stopped.
ScenarioImmediate responseNotify
Operator clothing, glove, or hair caught in rotating tool headPower off motor IMMEDIATELY; unplug at outlet; do NOT attempt to free until rotation fully stoppedInstructor + 911
Pipe rotates or shifts in stand (clamp failure)Power off motor; do not approach until rotation fully stopped; secure pipe before any further actionInstructor
Cutter breaks during cutPower off motor; clear area; inspect for shrapnel/embedded fragments before approachInstructor + first aid if struck
Smoke or burning smell from motorPower off; unplug at outlet; do not restartInstructor; tag machine out of service
Cord damage during operation (GFCI should trip)If GFCI did not trip, do not touch — power off at cabinet breakerInstructor immediately
Operator cut on freshly-beveled pipe edgeStop operation; remove pressure; control bleeding; cover with sterile dressingInstructor + first aid

Power Isolation

Cord-and-Plug Control Before servicing, cleaning, or accessory change — unplug the unit and maintain exclusive control of the plug. Per CSA Z460-20 cl. 4.3.5.
  1. Power switch OFF; wait for rotating head to fully stop
  2. Unplug cord at GFCI cabinet outlet
  3. Apply personal lock+tag at plug if service >5 minutes (per CSA Z460-20 cl. 4.3.5)
